A good sweet cream coffee creamer recipe should do one thing well. It should taste like that cold, velvety pour from your favorite café, minus the queue and the price tag.

Most versions we tried missed. Too sugary, too thin, or split in the jar by day three. So we kept tweaking the ratios until it finally behaved.

Below you’ll find the recipe, what’s actually in it, where the calories come from, and what to do with the leftovers. If you’re new to making your own, our guide to making coffee creamer at home is a good place to start.

What Is in Sweet Cream Coffee Creamer?

The homemade version is just cream, milk, sugar and vanilla. That’s it.

Each one has a job. Cream brings the richness. Milk loosens it so it pours. Sugar sweetens, and vanilla is what makes it taste like “sweet cream” instead of plain sweet.

Store-bought bottles vary a lot from brand to brand, so the label is your best guide there. Making it yourself means you know exactly what’s in the jar.

Is sweet cream the same as cold foam?

Same ingredients. Cold foam is just sweet cream that’s been frothed.

Can I freeze it?

We wouldn’t. Dairy fat tends to separate once thawed, and you lose that smooth pour.

Is it healthy?

A tablespoon or two is a modest treat. It adds up fast if you pour half a cup, though, if you’re watching sugar or saturated fat, check with your doctor or dietitian.

How Do I Make Homemade Sweet Cream Coffee Creamer?

This sweet cream coffee creamer recipe makes about one and half cup or roughly 24 tablespoons:

You’ll need

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract

Method

  1. Warm the milk and sugar in a small pan over low heat until the sugar melts
  2. Don’t let it boil
  3. Take it off the heat and stir in the vanilla
  4. Let it cool for a few minutes, then pour in the cold cream
  5. Transfer to a jar, shake well and chill for at least an hour

Our tip: We never heat the cream itself. Cold cream into a warm base keeps the flavor fresh and the texture smooth.

In a hurry? Shake everything cold in a jar for a full minute. Sugar dissolves slowly this way, so swap it for a spoonful of homemade vanilla coffee syrup instead.

Sweet Cream Coffee Creamer Recipe With Milk

No heavy cream in the fridge? You can still make a decent version; it just won’t be as thick:

  1. For a lighter one, use half a cup of half-and-half in place of the cream and milk; keep the same sugar and vanilla
  2. For a milk-only version, use 1½ cups of whole milk; it’ll taste more like sweet milk than sweet cream, and that’s fine for everyday use

Fat is what gives the real thing its cloudy, creamy feel, so expect a thinner pour.

How Many Calories Are in Homemade Sweet Cream Creamer?

Almost all of them come from the cream. Here’s the math for the batch above, using standard nutrition database values. We’ve left out the vanilla because the amount is small, so treat the total as a close estimate, not a label.

Ingredient Amount Approx. calories
Heavy whipping cream 1 cup 820
Whole milk ½ cup 75
Granulated sugar 2 tbsp 96
Whole batch about 990

Sources: heavy cream, whole milk, sugar.

Spread over 24 tablespoons, that’s about 41 calories each. Roughly 34 come from the cream, 4 from the sugar and 3 from the milk. Most people pour one or two tablespoons, so you’re looking at around 40 to 80 calories a cup.

The sugar works out to about 1 gram of added sugar per tbsp. Cut it to 1 tbsp and you save ~48 calories across the whole batch.

Brands of cream differ slightly, so check your carton if you’re counting closely.

How Long Does Sweet Cream Creamer Last?

Recipes online say anything from two days to two weeks. That’s a big gap, and it’s why people end up guessing.

Our rule is simple:

  1. Go by the use-by date on your cream and milk
  2. Try to finish the jar within five days
  3. Keep it at the back of the fridge, not the door
  4. Shake before each pour, because it separates a little
  5. If it smells even slightly sour, bin it

Can You Make Sweet Cream Creamer Recipe Dairy-Free?

Yes, with a swap:

  1. Use 2 parts barista style oat milk to 1 part full fat canned coconut cream
  2. Then add the same sugar and vanilla

It’s thinner than the dairy version and has a faint coconut note. Oat milk alone turned out watery for us, so the coconut cream matters. The calories will differ from the table above, so check your labels.

What to Make With Sweet Cream Creamer?

It does more than lighten coffee:

  • Cold foam: Froth about ¼ cup with a handheld frother for 15-30 seconds, then spoon it over cold brew, iced coffee
  • Straight over ice: Pour one tbsp or two over iced coffee and watch it swirl
  • Breakfast: Use it over berries or warm oatmeal

The Last Tip

This sweet cream coffee creamer recipe takes only 5 minutes and 4 ingredients. It beats most bottles we’ve tried. Start with the base, then tweak the sweetness to your taste, and keep the jar in the fridge for only the week ahead.

Make a small batch first. You’ll know quickly whether it’s your kind of pour.
